MN Ranks High for Senior Well-Being, But Concerns Emerge - Senior Community Services

Minnesota is among the top five states in a new report measuring a range of well-being factors for older populations, but some concerning trends playing out nationally are surfacing in this region.

United Health Foundation is out with its America’s Health Rankings Senior Report. The findings show a decadelong progress in boosting flu vaccinations and the percentage of those reporting good to great health.

However, there is also a more-than 100% increase in drug deaths, and a 13% increase in suicides among those 65 and older.

Amy Perron from the MN STAR Program will share information about Minnesota’s FREE Assistive Technology Lending Library and more. Or, you can learn how Tech for Seniors, a program of Gifts for Seniors - Twin Cities, seeks to help its clients using tablets, internet access, and learning and support programs. The key question to be answered in this session is: “How do you help an older adult with no technology experience get connected, be engaged, and actively learn to use a tablet?” Don Frederiksen will answer this question and share principles and approaches Tech for Seniors uses to engage clients while keeping them safe. Digital technology is a new area of interventions that can improve health and reduce disparities. Since the pandemic, SDK has led community-informed research on both digital equity for Ramsey County and Saint Paul, as well extensive qualitative interviews on telehealth experiences with community-based healthcare providers like FQHCs and nonprofits providing home and community-based services to Medicare enrollees, as well as patients. Through this presentation, she will share lessons about the opportunities and barriers of connectivity to advancing the social determinants of health and health care equity. Arlene generously donated all of her late husband and father’s tools to support our SCS repair team and the Minnesota Trades Academy. She opened her garage and shed, allowing our repair personnel to come over and "shop" for what they needed. It was truly a dream come true for our repair team!
